We received requests to bring the Desert File back for Lent this year.
The “Desert File,” is meant to be a resource and sanctum for you during Lent.
The concept of what the desert is differs in people around the world. Even a single desert is never quite the same – changing by time of day, season and weather. It can be barren, forbidding and dangerous, but at other times, beautiful, inviting and enchanting. For Lent, I encourage you to find your own desert – contemplate, reflect and explore it as only you can.
This “Desert of Lent” is meant to slow you down, it’s not an academic pursuit. I suggest you don’t read through everything in one go, but rather ease into and through it. Choose a few photos, take a paragraph or poem and dwell on them for a few days, journal them, before moving on.
If you know how to, or can get someone’s assistance, I also recommend that you choose one of the uploaded photos and make it the “screen saver” on your smartphone, tablet and computer for Lent. Perhaps change the photo every few days, so each time you use your device, the “Desert” is there in the background speaking to you.
Monasticism has tradition of choosing a book to read for Lent. Again, without becoming too busy, as this is a very different Lent, perhaps you have a book or novel on the desert you may like to read over the coming weeks.
Laura, Randy and I will be adding a new desert photo for each day of Lent. Be well and remain open as we journey through the next 40 days.
Buen Camino,
Michael
